President of Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA) Waheed Niyi Brimmo has urged governments at all levels to pay up debts owed local contractors in the country.
Brimmo said this year's edition of Architects Colloquium opened in Abuja Tuesday, saying government should also patronize local contractors.
"Huge debt owed contractors has been one of the greatest deterrents to growth of indigenous construction delivery system," he said.
"Also indigenous construction firms need patronage and protection while at the same time encouraging the production and consumption of local building materials, plant and equipment.
"The protracted budgetary process that makes project scheduling bedeviled with uncertainties must be addressed and targets of developments in each budgetary provision must be optimally accomplished and so ascertained by stakeholders," he said.
